Introductory study distress. The Luxembourgs hence in 1341 procured the necessary means by exacting the Jewish tax in advance. They also commonly had a deposit paid by the relevant town and left the subsequent collection of Jewish taxes to the local administration, as in the case of the document from 13 August 1345. In this document, John of Luxembourg lets the council of Wroclaw know that they should collect the claim against the sovereign in the amount of 1400 marks from the rents paid to the royal chamber by the Jews in Wroclaw and Sroda Slaska.22 Another type of document is the charter from 27 September 1345, is- sued in Prague, by which King John allows the council of the city of Wroclaw to use stones 23 from the Jewish cemetery for repair and renewal of the city's bulwarks." Charles' document from 8th of September 1347 , by which the sovereign entrusted the city council in Wroclaw with protection of local Jews and also allowed the council to increase or lower their fees according to their own judgement, was not included in this edition, either.24 Finally, Görlitz is subject matter of a document from 19th of May 1329, by which John of Luxembourg incorporates the city in the Bohemian Crown and confirms its privileges. Besides other provisions, he gives the city a Mile Right (a one-mile ban on particular trades and crafts) and entrusts the Jews to the protection of the city." One of the as-yet little used types of sources, which is, however, immensely rich in information, are municipal record books.26 Until 1347, the municipal records in this edi- tion are dominated by entries from the Old Town's Liber vetustissimus and from Brno's tax registers (for instance Nr. 92, 103, 104, 105, 107, 109, 205, 206, 208, 209, 210 etc.). The year 1311 is referred to by an entry from the municipal book of Nový Bydžov, in which Jews appear as creditors (Nr. 99). Starting from the 1340s, there come also records from the Cheb book of outlaws (Nr. 141, 190), the Znojmo book of testaments (Nr. 194) and promissory notes from the earliest court books of the town of Louny (Nr. 238, 239, 240). It should be mentioned that this is the first time these entries have ever been made ac- cessible in an edition. Economic entries predominate in the municipal books, concerning in the vast majority of cases loan transactions of Jewish financiers. By this time, however, we already encounter municipal statutes which regulate the coexistence of the Christian and Jewish populations, or in which Jews are accused of robbery or, on the other hand, appear as the victims of violence.
