Prameny k dějinám Židů v Čechách a na Moravě ve středověku
a particular country. Today, they are collectively referred to as the Statuta Iudaeorum. The
second group is comprised of documents or forms which either pre-empt violence against
the Jewish population (Nr. 52, 154, 156, 167, 181) or provide protection to Jewish converts
(Nr. 200, 227, 242).
Non-Bohemica documents deposited in Bohemian archives (two documents) were
not included." We also decided to leave out the documents (a total of ten), which were
released by Czech-lands issuers but whose recipients were outside the geographical delimi-
tation of this edition. The discarded writings concern the cities of Wroclaw and Görlitz,
which in the High and Late Middle Ages were part of the territorial whole of the lands
of the Bohemian Crown. This group includes the decrees of John of Luxembourg, which
were intended for the council of the city of Wroclaw and concern the Jewish community
there." In the same way, the royal edict from October 1341 is related to the Jews. In this
edict, John of Luxembourg granted Jewish taxes to the burghers of Sroda Slaska for the
construction of robust bulwarks.2° Another four documents from April 1345 also deal
with the taxes of Silesian Jews, which John of Luxembourg and his son Charles collected
in advance from the local Jews to moderate the constant financial distress faced by the
royal treasury. 2 Fifty-eight Silesian Jews who had to help the sovereigns with their cash
are explicitly mentioned by name in these four documents (which were issued in Wroclaw
and destroyed during World War II). It is symptomatic that, for the purpose of captatio
benevolentiae and in the expressions of gratitude, the named individuals are denoted with
the epithet “providi et discreti viri", which for Jews is seldom encountered in period docu
ments and appears most often in cases when Jews helped aristocratic or noble debtors in
18) The first document from 6 February 1341 informs us that Alber of Lichtenegg, with the consent of his heirs, had
decided to sell property to resolve his debts to the Jews. Orig. NA Praha, sign RM 2965. The second document not in-
cluded, from 17 December 1345, contains a declaration by Wirnde of Breitenstein that he is obliged to pay the Count
Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Bavaria Rudolf II (1327-1353) according to the accounting of the office perhaps in
Dürnersdorf (Du'rndorf) the amount of 1073 pounds of hellers. The list of items includes the amount of 14 pounds of
hellers to pay off the Margrave of Baden from Jews in Nuremberg and the debt to the Jew Simoson in Nuremberg in
the amount of 177 pounds of hellers. The original is now held in the NA Praha, sign. CG-L 46. According to the relevant
Nuremberg municipal book (lost today) it could in the case of Simoson of Nuremberg be a Simson, who was accepted
as a Nuremberg burgher on 23 September 1339.
19) The first sovereign document comes from 16 October 1341. In this record, King John of Luxembourg tells the
burgomaster and town councillors of the city of Wroclaw that he has come to an agreement with the servants of the royal
chamber - the Jews. Every Jew in Wroclaw will pay tax according to his means to the king once a year for 10 years and
will be freed from other fees. The same applies also for any Jew who moved from another lord or from another city to
Wroclaw during that period (of. KORN ed. 1870, Nr. 169, p. 152).
