Prameny k dějinám Židů v Čechách a na Moravě ve středověku
is a “regesta" edition of records related to the history of the Jews in the Empire up to
1278, authored by the German historian Julius Aronius.' This work, in the spirit of classi-
cal German historiography, conceives of the territory of Bohemia and Moravia as part of
the Empire. Four years later, a number of Jewish records related to the Czech lands were
made available by Bohumil Bondy and Frantisšek Dvorský. It is particularly this latter
work, insufficient from the perspective of modern historiography, that for a long period
became the main background material for any endeavours at writing a history of the Jews
in Bohemia and Moravia. It is not a “regesta" edition in the true sense of the term (i.e.,
a compendium of critically evaluated and annotated sources). The authors tried to accu-
mulate every known mention of the Jewish populace in the lands of the Bohemian Crown,
although without proper criticism of the sources made available or critical commentaries
on their credibility." Besides this work, there is a significantly higher quality publication
by Berthold Bretholz from 1935, which is, however, limited to the history of the Jews in
Moravia.1° Recently, Eveline Brugger and Birgit Wiedl published a compendium edition,
in the truly modern conception of the term, of the Jewish documentation from the terri-
tory of Austria, where some records naturally also concern Bohemia and Moravia.
The absence of a critical edition of written Jewish records has had the consequence
that so far we are lacking a full-fledged description of the history of the Jewish popula-
tion. The most frequently preserved source evidence, relating to Jewish loan transactions,
allow us to look at the history of the Jews in the 12th and 13th centuries only through the
schematic prism of the testimony of promissory notes. It is specifically the Jewish loans
that portray the basic characteristic of Jewish settlement in Prague up to the middle of

bourg period, see DOLEŽALOVA 2012, pp. 679-687; the Jewish settlements in Bohemian towns were presented by HOFFMANN
2009, pp. 378-392. Of the foreign works, special mention should be made of the studies in the proceedings Die Juden in
den böhmischen Ländern (of. particularly the studies by TISCHLER 1983, pp. 37-56; and HILSCH 1983, pp. 13-26).
6) Translator's note: the term "regesta", as used by Czech and German historiographers, refers to excerpts from docu-
ments, arranged in chronological order. The modern conception of the term implies critical analysis and annotation. As
there is no direct analogue term in English, the term “compendium" is used throughout this translation.

9) The work by Bohumil Bondy and František Dvorský is very broadly conceived. The intention of the authors was to
collect all of the sources concerning the life of Jews in the Czech lands from the historical beginnings until the Modern
Period. The work hence predominantly recapitulates the sources then known, while they often do not present their
original version or their precise citation. Moreover, next to one another and without distinction they place historical
reports, formulaic records and reports from secondary literature, oftentimes impossible to verify today. These are the
main reasons we have decided to present this work in the bibliography and not among the full-fledged editions.
