Introductory study the 14th century according to the extensive editorial series Germania Judaica.12 As the first volumes of Germania Judaica were compiled before 1989, it was not possible for their authors to verify all sources, and therefore they did not quote them thoroughly. Many sources are missing there and sometime the authors refer only to oral statements by Bohemian and Moravian archivists, which cannot be verified any more. The facts con- tained in these volumes therefore do not always correspond to what is presented in our edition, which only now critically complements and evaluates many of them. Currently, a comprehensive electronic database of sources on the history of the Jews from 1273 to 1519 is being prepared at the Institute of Arye Maimon in Trier within the project Corpus der Quellen zur Geschichte der Juden im spätmittelalterlichen Reich (here- after only Corpus). Its bounding dates are derived from the year by which the edition by Julius Aronius ends (1273) and from the date of the accession of Charles V to the Roman throne (1519), which is considered to be the milestone between the Middle Ages and the Modern Period. The present compendium edition of “Sources on the History of the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia in the Middle Ages" (hereafter “Sources on the History of the Jews" or just “edition") builds on earlier Bohemian and Moravian works. Its methodology is anchored in the above-mentioned Corpus project, including its chronological definition. The year 1347, when Charles IV was crowned king of Bohemia, was set as a partial final milestone. The “Sources on the History of the Jews" are territorially delimited by the borders of the modern Czech Republic. The project Corpus includes sources from the territory of the entire Empire, including the territory of Bohemia and Moravia and the adjacent lands of the Bohemian Crown, whereas the Bohemian and Moravian sources will be supplied for the Corpus project database from the background materials of the “Sources of the History of the Jews". Unlike the Corpus project, this edition also includes sources from the period before 1273, starting from the earliest mentions (from the 10th century), with regard to the fact that the edition by Julius Aronius is not sufficient for the Bohemian and Moravian milieu and does not include all of the preserved sources. In the collection of material, we have focused only on the written and material monuments that can be demonstrably dated prior to 1347 (inclusive) and which were created within the contemporary borders of the Czech Republic (Bohemia, Moravia, Bohemian Silesia and the Bohemian part of the Cheb region, including the town of Cheb).
