the legal settlements, and the legal order in general (cp. tab. VI., par. 3). the notary of the town washed off several old entries without hesitation — it is sure that he couldn’t do so without the consent of the bench of justice — (cp. tab. XVI. and the bottom-half of the tab. XV.) and replaced them by fresh entries, as soon as there was no blank place in the book. Otherwise, the cancellation of the entry was carried out by crossing the entry diagonally or by appending the note: Cancellatum per... (cp. tab. I., par. 1.). By the effort to make use of every blank place in the book we may account for breaching the chronological order of the entries. An entry dating from a much later time is in the very beginning of the book, on the first page, even before the proem of the book. That part of the Book of conscience which has been published in this edition, of course isn't a base broad enough for an elaborated working up of all the facts that are contained in this important historical monu- ment. Besides, there was want of time for a minute elaboration caused by the fixed and not very distant limit granted for the preparation of this edition. Let us hope that the publication of the opening sixteen pages of the book Liber consciencie will incite a further publication of other parts of the book ; thus the opportunity will be afforded for a due dis- sertation. On an explicit demand of the editors of this booklet, to each autotype- table a modern transcription of the text has been attached which may be available for the use of those readers who are not skilled in palaeo- graphy. The special purpose of this edition is to serve as a keepsake for the foreign members of the World Students Collegium in remembrance of their excursion to Nový Bydžov. 117]
