he Student Union at Nový Bydžov has arranged a student-feast »The
128th Merendah« in this year, to celebrate the bicentenary of the first
Merendah. The importance of these feasts, the Merendahs, exceeded
highly that of other local feasts, especially in the time of the Revival
of our Nation. The participation even of the most prominent men and
women, who had well deserved of the Revival of our Nation, in these
feasts, proves their considerable significance for the cultural develop-
ment of the whole Nation.
The students of Nový Bydžov decided to use a part of the net proceeds
of the 128. Merendah for the autotypical publication of the first quire
of the judicial book ot the town of Nový Bydžov called »Liber conscien-
cie« and so proved a deep sense of their duty towards the Nation and
towards its cultural needs, in a very nice way.
This booklet contains the autotype-reproduction of the sixteen pages
opening the Book of Conscience, Liber consciencie of the town of Nový
Bydžov (paginae 21—36 according to the pagination from the beginning
of the 19th century, that didn't take into consideration the fact, that the
original sequence of the quires of the book had been put in disorder by
a negligent bookbinder). In fact, the notation of the tables (I.—XVI.)
is the right pagination of the published pages of the book. The Book of
Conscience contains 231 parchment folios at the present time. It seems,
however, it had but 32 leaves when founded; the number of the quires
increased later on according to the want of place for further entries. —
When reffering to the text of the book we mention the figures of the
tables in the first place.
The Book of conscience that was founded in the year 1311 — only a few
years after the foundation of the town of Nový Bydžov by the king
Wenceslas II. — and the book of the Old Town of Prague, from the
year 1310, usually called Liber vetustissimus Veteris urbis Pragensis, are
the two oldest town-books in this country, preserved to the present
